Personal Development
SMSC
SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development is woven throughout school life, helping children to develop a strong sense of self, understand others and become active members of their community. Building on the Characteristics of Effective Learning established in EYFS, we encourage pupils to be reflective, curious and respectful learners who engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
Assemblies play an important role in promoting shared values, celebrating achievements and encouraging children to consider moral, social and cultural issues. Through learning about a wide range of positive role models, pupils are inspired to demonstrate resilience, kindness, determination and ambition in their own lives.
Religious Education provides opportunities for children to explore different faiths, beliefs and worldviews, fostering understanding, respect and appreciation of diversity. These themes are strengthened through meaningful curriculum links across subjects, enabling pupils to make connections between their learning and the wider world.
We are proud of our strong community links, which help children understand their role within both the local and wider community. Through engagement with local events, organisations and experiences, pupils develop a sense of belonging, responsibility and citizenship.
Alongside this, children are encouraged to explore and celebrate their own heritage, gaining a deeper understanding of their identity while valuing the backgrounds and experiences of others. Through these opportunities, we nurture thoughtful, respectful and well-rounded individuals who are prepared to contribute positively to modern society.
British Values
British Values are embedded throughout our curriculum and daily school life, helping children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become responsible, respectful and active citizens. Through meaningful learning experiences, pupils gain an understanding of the values that underpin life in modern Britain and learn how to contribute positively to their communities.
Democracy is promoted by encouraging children to share their views, participate in decision-making and understand that every voice matters. Opportunities such as pupil leadership roles, class discussions and voting help pupils experience democratic processes first-hand and appreciate the importance of fairness and representation.
We foster an understanding of individual liberty by helping children develop confidence, independence and responsibility. Pupils are encouraged to make informed choices, express themselves respectfully and recognise their rights and freedoms while understanding the responsibilities that come with them.
The rule of law is reinforced through clear expectations, positive behaviour systems and opportunities to understand the importance of rules in keeping individuals and communities safe. Children learn that laws and rules play a vital role in creating a fair and orderly society.
Mutual respect is at the heart of our school community. We encourage pupils to value themselves and others, celebrate differences and demonstrate kindness, empathy and consideration in their interactions. Alongside this, children develop tolerance and an appreciation of different cultures, beliefs and backgrounds, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
Through these experiences, we prepare children to thrive in a diverse society and make a positive contribution to the world around them.
Extra Curriculum
We believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Our rich programme of extracurricular opportunities enhances the curriculum, broadens horizons and helps children develop confidence, independence and a lifelong love of learning.
Residential visits provide valuable opportunities for pupils to challenge themselves, develop resilience and build strong relationships with their peers. Through new experiences and responsibilities, children grow in confidence and develop the skills needed to work collaboratively and independently.
A wide range of educational visits and visitors enrich learning by bringing the curriculum to life. These experiences allow pupils to make meaningful connections between their learning and the wider world, inspiring curiosity and deepening understanding.
Our extensive programme of after-school clubs encourages children to explore new interests, develop talents and enjoy learning in different contexts. From sports and creative activities to academic and enrichment opportunities, these experiences support personal growth and wellbeing.
We are committed to developing children’s cultural capital by providing opportunities that broaden their experiences, raise aspirations and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Through these experiences, pupils gain the knowledge and confidence needed to thrive in modern society.
Additional support programmes such as Nessy help children develop essential literacy skills, ensuring all pupils can access learning with confidence. Morning Circuits further support readiness for learning by developing coordination, concentration and physical wellbeing, helping children start each day positively and successfully.
Through these opportunities, we nurture well-rounded, confident and engaged learners who are prepared for future success both in and beyond school.
Mental Health
We recognise that positive mental health and wellbeing are fundamental to children’s success, happiness and personal development. We are committed to creating a nurturing environment where every child feels valued, supported and able to thrive both academically and emotionally.
Our strong pastoral support ensures that children have trusted adults who listen, care and help them navigate challenges. By building positive relationships and fostering a sense of belonging, we create a safe and inclusive school community where pupils feel confident to express themselves and seek support when needed.
Wellbeing is woven throughout school life, helping children develop emotional awareness, resilience and effective strategies for managing their thoughts and feelings. We encourage pupils to understand the importance of balancing physical and mental health, enabling them to make positive choices that support their overall wellbeing.
Developing healthy self-esteem is a key priority. We celebrate effort, progress and individual achievement, helping children recognise their strengths, value their uniqueness and develop confidence in their abilities. Through positive experiences and encouragement, pupils learn to believe in themselves and approach new opportunities with optimism.
We also promote healthy risk-taking, encouraging children to step outside their comfort zones, embrace challenges and learn from mistakes. By developing resilience, perseverance and a growth mindset, pupils gain the confidence to tackle new experiences and become independent, capable learners.
Through these opportunities, we equip children with the emotional skills and self-belief needed to flourish both now and in the future.
Diversity
We are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive and welcoming environment where every child feels valued, respected and able to succeed. We celebrate the uniqueness of each individual and recognise that diversity enriches our school community, helping children develop understanding, empathy and respect for others.
Through our curriculum, assemblies and wider school experiences, pupils learn about the protected characteristics and the importance of equality, fairness and inclusion. We encourage children to appreciate and celebrate differences in culture, faith, background, ability and identity, while recognising the shared values that unite us as a community.
Our inclusive environment ensures that all children have access to high-quality learning opportunities and the support they need to thrive. We promote a culture of mutual respect, belonging and acceptance, where every voice is heard and every individual is encouraged to reach their full potential.
By developing understanding, respect and appreciation of diversity, we prepare our pupils to become compassionate, responsible citizens who can contribute positively to an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.
